Taking Advantage of Downtime

I am going to try and blog more often in order to keep my writing juices flowing. It won’t be a novel or anything. Just some random thoughts of the day or an update on my journey through life.

Seth Godin encourages people with a blog to post daily. I cannot imagine doing that, but hopefully the practice of writing will be something that can be very useful in the future.

Acting

Being self-employed is interesting because there are days when I work from 6am-11pm and then there are days like today. I watched the movie version of EVITA starring Madonna in preparation for my upcoming show. Not as good as it could have been, like many stage to screen adaptations. Thankfully, according to many Wikihow entries that time spent watching the movie is considered “research” time for tax purposes. I mention that because now that I’m getting paid a little here and there for my acting, I need to start tracking my expenses for tax deductions, etc.

Real Estate

Anyway, every thing that I’m currently working on that is real estate-related is kind of on auto-pilot at this point. Direct mail is on its way, listing under contract just waiting for settlement, buyers under contract have everything lined up 6 weeks before their settlement. So outside of following up with a few things, my days can sometimes be very free.

It all evens itself out for sure, especially when I am working those 17-18 hour days. Plus I have to remind myself that the reason I got into real estate was to pursue the performing arts, so even though I thoroughly enjoy my time acting and singing, it should technically be counted toward my total working hours now. At least mentally.

Parenting

After that I picked my kids up from school and took them to their dentist appointment. No cavities to report, which is great. Then back home to fold some laundry. Pretty glamorous I know. But anytime I think back to my days in a cubicle, I remember that I am blessed beyond belief to be where I am today. Sure, it can be a grind sometimes, and being self-employed is certainly not for the faint of heart, but for those of us who are wired for it, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

What I’m reading:

I’m currently in the middle of several books (I tend to start a lot of books at once and then slowly crawl through each of them):

The Motorcycle Diaries by Ernesto “Che” Guevara (researching my next role)

Damascus Countdown by Joel C. Rosenberg

Out of the Comfort Zone by Ray Comfort

What I’m watching:

Everything is Beautiful with Bob Ross(very relaxing after a stressful day)

GOTHAM, Season 2 (a little violent for my taste but the characters are so well done that I really get inspired to explore various acting styles, plus they just added “The Commish” to the cast, so it is even better now)

Che (starring Benicio Del Toro – again, research)

What I’m listening to:

EVITA – Original Broadway Cast Album #Patinkining

“Off Camera with Sam Jones” podcast

“How to Start a Startup” podcast

That’s all for now.

Godspeed,

Geoff
